The Brief - The owners brief was to add a small rear extension to their existing home to meet their needs in both layout and design as well as to provide a modern, light and airy open plan dining area, allowing the occupants to spill out on to their private rear sun terrace. The extension should be of a high quality to seamlessly match the mid-century contemporary style of the existing property yet it also needed to be cost effective.

The Design - The single storey rear extension was designed to sit harmoniously alongside the original property with matching render and sharp mono-pitch roof design. Double doors lead out from the open plan kitchen, living and dining area to the rear courtyard. The ceiling internally is vaulted full height which lends a sense of space and height to a compact extension.

The challenges of the sensitive site were considered at all stages and incorporated into the design which has minimal impact on its surrounding neighbours. The contemporary rear extension sits down into the rear courtyard and fits comfortably within the setting. The construction incorporates environmentally friendly and matching high quality materials as well as high levels of insulation to minimise the use of heating.

The Build - the project was constructed by a local builder with a good reputation who has constructed high quality projects in the locality.
